We’ve finished our league campaign now and all eyes are on our Yorkshire Shield final against Ilkley on May 4.

Do I have an idea in my head of the 15 I want to take the field at York? Yes I do.

Are there places still up for grabs. Absolutely, yes.

It will depend how the guys train between now and May 4, and if they can show the intensity and desire I want to see to pick them in the team.

It’s hard to say whether this break of two weekends we have without a game will help or hinder us going into the final.

We’ve been on fire recently, playing some superb running rugby and I’ve been delighted with the way we’ve finished the season off and we’re on a bit of a roll.

We will stand more chance of staying injury-free without fixtures to play though, so we need to try and be positive.

Ilkley are no doubt in the same boat too, so we shouldn’t be at a disadvantage.

It’s really important that we step up the training for the guys now over the next couple of weeks.

If we aren’t playing games, we need to maintain that intensity level elsewhere, and the training pitch is the only place to do that.

We can’t stand still for the next few weeks, we need to keep the guys on their toes.

Looking back on our season, it has been a real mixed bag.

We started well, had a really poor spell in the middle and we’ve just ended well.

The guys have shown they can really play well on the hard pitches when they have the chance to play a fast, expansive game.

But a lot of our games are on what I would call unsociable pitches and we’ve shown we can also shoot ourselves in the foot and throw games away.

There’s a lot to take into next season, that’s for sure.
