LEE DOUGLAS: We must improve in Shield clash

I wasn’t at the game on Saturday at Dinnington, but the feedback I’ve had suggest we were well beaten by an organised side and the elements.

The guys battled the elements in the first half, only for the winds and rain to relent after the break.

From what I’ve heard though, that wouldn’t have made much of a difference as we simply weren’t good enough.

The guys were apparently tackling very high, which shows a lazy streak. I can’t put my finger on why the guys are struggling at the moment.

Maybe that continuity was missing with me not being at the match. The guys need clear instructions on what to do and what not to do and perhaps that didn’t help.

We haven’t been blown away like that since I came to the club and it’s tough to accept.

As a club we have to look forward though and we have a make or break cup game at home on Saturday that we need to focus on now.

The players told me when I came in that they wanted to push the top sides in the league and do well in the Yorkshire Shield.

It seems the league aspirations have gone now, so this is last chance saloon to achieve something other than mid-table mediocrity this season.

We really have to break the shackles that these guys seem to be operating under that it is fine to finish mid-table.

It’s always a bonus to still have something to play for at this stage of the season, even when you’re sitting near the middle of the league table.

It’s up to the guys now to make sure they train and prepare properly and then turn up and do the business Saturday.

Yes, we’ll be favourites as we have home advantage, but we know very little about Guisborough apart from they’re up near the top of their table.

So we can’t take them lightly, and if we want to achieve anything from this season then we need to make sure we’re at the races on Saturday.

Hopefully we can get a big crowd down this Saturday to give the lads a boost too.
