LEE DOUGLAS: We need to improve defensively

Saturday certainly wasn’t our best performance, we were well off the pace and we weren’t strong enough in the tackle.

It’s far from an excuse, but the three-hour coach trip to Settle to play North Ribblesdale wasn’t great preparation.

The guys looked very tired and the pitch didn’t help at all. It was heavy and it took it out of the players.

Having said that, collectively we didn’t work together as a unit and we didn’t defend well enough at all.

The tackling in particular was very poor and the guys need to learn from that and quickly or sides will expose us going forward.

It was a bad day at the office for us, that’s for sure.

With ball in hand we never really have any problems scoring points, that’s not the issue.

Jordan Wakeham is a perfect case of that. He kept us in the game with his quick thinking, but he’s another one who needs to improve with the defensive part of his game.

It’s all good and well looking good with the ball in hand, but what is most important is showing that desire to work hard when the opponent has the ball and work hard for the team.

We didn’t work hard enough on Saturday and there’s been a few times this season that that’s been the case.

If we want to be up there come the end of the season, the guys really need to start working on the defensive aspect of our game.

We have a big game against a very good team in Bradford & Bingley in the Yorkshire Shield on Saturday and we will have to improve if we’re to stay in the competition.

They have some exceptional players and they’re top of the league for a reason, and if the guys don’t put the effort in defensively then we won’t win the game.

I’ve said it before, if the guys all put 100% in and we perform, we can beat anyone on our day, and Saturday is no different.
