Scarborough aim to end season a high at Selby

Scarborough travel to Selby on Saturday for the final Yorkshire One game of the season with much at stake for the hosts.

Starting with a 21-0 reverse at Silver Royd on the opening day of the season Selby have struggled since and find themselves third-from-bottom in the table and they could be doomed to the drop if results don’t go their way on Saturday.

Two points separate Selby from second-bottom club Crossleyans and a Selby defeat and a Crossleyans win would see Selby relegated.

Crossleyans entertain fellow west Yorkshiremen Old Brods so a nail-biting finish to the season is in store.

Last Saturday both teams lost on the road, Crossleyans 37-7 at York and Selby 25-18 at Yarnbury.

Scarborough’s 18-man squad for the game surprisingly includes the return of long-term injury victim Tom Harrison who only returned to training this week.

Player of the season Isaac Faamau returned to New Zealand this week because of a close family illness but Jordan Wakeham, who was feared to have sustained a serious abdominal injury, has fortunately recovered and plays, while Mikey Readman misses the game.

Sitting comfortably in sixth, Scarborough travel looking to enjoy a game with the pressure off but for Selby it’ll be a stressful afternoon.

I feel a high-scoring game is on the cards to match the Seasiders’ last couple of visits to Selby’s Sandhill Lane HQ where they were 36-33 winners in the Yorkshire Shield semi-finals in 2013-14 and 32-30 winners on the opening day of last season.

Following last weekend’s cancellation due to unfit pitches, the Vikings take on BP Chemicals in the semi-final of the East Yorkshire Merit League at Silver Royd, Kick-off is at 3pm.
