Last weekend I was in London which meant that I missed my first club game of the season and had to follow the game on Twitter.
You can imagine my delight when Scarborough raced to a 19-0 lead in about 12 minutes at league-leaders Bradford & Bingley, however that was as good as it got and the home side staged a stirring comeback to win the game comfortably 39-22.
A string of injuries means that Scarborough are fielding a fairly inexperienced side, especially up-front where half of the pack is 18-years-old or younger.
They sorely miss the experience of Paul Taylor in the front row and the now-departed Eamon Chapman in the back row.
Long-term injuries to Tomasz Chadwick, Martin Robinson and Harry Domett have effected a back division which is constantly re-shuffled.
However, the youngsters who have come into the side have done exceptionally well and Scarborough are still mid-table and undefeated at home.
For Saturday’s game against Hullensians, coach Lee Douglas names the same side as started the game at Bradford last week although he has yet to name a front-row substitute.
The Humbersiders have made a good start to the season winning five and losing two; Malton at home and Bridlington away.
They’ve averaged over 30 points a game and last week blew away the challenge of Yarnbury with a 41-7 home win.
Last season honours were even with Hullensians winning 28-24 at their Springhead Lane HQ and losing 26-17 here at Silver Royd.
Also in action on Saturday are the Vikings, who travel to Humberside to take on Hullensians’ Hawks, while the Danesmen entertain Hullensians 3rds at Silver Royd.
All Saturday games kick off at 3pm.
On Sunday the club’s women’s team, the Valkyries are on the road as they travel to Derby in the National Junior Cup.
Finally, with next Saturday being the Rugby World Cup final all league games are cancelled, however the Vikings are due to play Driffield at Silver Royd with a yet to be announced kick-off time.
It should be a great day at the clubhouse with the lead up to the match on the big screens and kick-off at 4pm.
