It’s vitally important that the guys all show me a response to our first defeat of the season at York on Saturday.
It was very disappointing to lose our 100% record, but it was more about us coming up against a very impressive side rather than us being poor.
Our performance in the first half wasn’t too bad. We were 13-0 down at half-time and the guys had dug in and shown great commitment.
We perhaps didn’t look after the ball as much as I’d have liked, which meant we couldn’t apply as much pressure as we’d have wanted.
There were a couple of opportunities that we spurned as well.
We needed to start the second half well and try to get a foothold in the game, but they got off to a stormer and scored two early tries, which really was a kick in the teeth for us.
The guys battled back well and kept going and we scored a fantastic try, which was great given York’s commitment to try and keep us to nil.
There were a couple of standout performances for me, Matthew Oxtoby in particular stuck to his task admirably and kept making his tackles.
It was also great to have Ben Martin back off the bench, and he did what he usually does and defended superbly.
York are a very, very strong side though and it will take a good team to beat them this season.
It’s so important that we show a reaction against Bradford Salem on Saturday.
The first thing was to get big numbers to training on Tuesday night and we had just that, and we put them through a tough, physical session.
Then we need to get back to winning ways on Saturday.
We welcome back Harry Domett after a lengthy period on the sidelines, which is fantastic for us.
We will have to see how a few of the lads hold up later in the week, Tom Ratcliffe has niggled his calf and there are are one or two others carrying knocks too.
Matty Young will be missing for a lot longer than we’d thought and hoped.
It looks like we’ll be without him until at least Christmas as he’s done more damage to his knee than first anticipated.
