Scarborough RUFC’s women’s team - the Valkyries - ran out winners of their historic first league game, coming from behind to claim a 32-26 success.
The Silver Royd ladies surged to a 10-0 lead at Acklam Avengers with only a quarter of an hour on the clock, thanks to a couple of tries from number eight Jenna Redmond.
Despite Scarborough’s lively start to proceedings, a brace of touchdowns by Acklam’s Yorkshire fly-half Tara Breslin, plus a conversion, saw the hosts lead 12-10 at the break.
A further try and conversion just after half-time saw the home side to a 19-10 advantage.
A Hayley Evans score reduced the arrears to four points for the visitors at 19-15, before tries from Dani Rowley and Jess Glanvill stretched the lead to 25-19 in the closing stages of the game.
Skipper Cathy-Ann Myers clinched the win with a superb solo effort which she converted herself for a 32-19 lead.
Another elusive Tara Breslin run saw Acklam close the gap with a converted try, but Scarborough had already done enough to take the points.
The Valkyries are back in league action this Sunday when they take on Morpeth at Silver Royd.
