Wales exit is disappointing

Scarborough Evening News’ Rugby World Cup blogger Jim Hughes sends his thoughts from the Antipodes.

I’m still bitterly disappointed by Wales’ exit. I think that the Welsh have played so well in all their matches and have conducted themselves with distinction, both on and of the field. This notion should not be affected by Sam Warburton’s sending-off. His tackle was probably illegal but it was not on purpose, a strong man tackling a smaller player is bound to have such an impact and it can only be labelled as ‘one of those things’.

It is important however not to lose sight of the fact that Wales missed 11 points with kicks and had any of those gone over we would have won, such are the fine margins in sport.

Focus now switches to the game that nobody wants (except the TV companies).

Wales have announced a strong team, as have Australia, so it should be a good contest. It is interesting how both this game and the final are the same as in 1987.

I am looking forward to an All Black final win and a Wales triumph tomorrow.

Wales take on Australia in the third place play-off tomorrow, coverage is live on ITV from 8.30am. Coverage of the Rugby World Cup final between New Zealand and France can be seen live on ITV from 9am on Sunday.
