Scarborough RUFC back on the Twickenham trail

The club was formed in 1898 as the Durham University College of Medicine RFC; renamed Medicals RFC, the club was then elected a senior member of the Northumberland Rugby Union in 1920 and was Northumberland Senior Cup Winner in 1922, 1923, 1952 and 1953.

Their most notable achievement was on May 4 1996 when they won the National Junior Club Knock-out Competition, (The Pilkington Shield) beating Helston RFC (Cornwall) 16-6 at Twickenham.

In the leagues they were Champions of Durham/Northumberland (D/N) Three in 2006-07 and were promoted from D/N Two to One in 2010. They still play in D/N One and following the 27-19 home defeat of struggling Ryton last week, Medicals are seventh in the league, one place below Consett who were beaten 20-6 on the road in the first group match of the competition; Scarborough crushed Consett 55-0 at Silver Royd last month.

Last Saturday Scarborough clinched both league points in their game with Hullensians thanks to a late Paul Taylor try.

Other rugby action sees the Scarborough RUFC veteran’s team, The Gulls, take on Morley RUFC veterans at Silver Royd this evening.

Kick-off is at 7.30pm and not 8pm as stated on the Scarborough Rugby Club website.

Among those starring for the Silver Royd ‘Golden Oldies’ are Marcus Edwards, Simon Smith, Jamie Drayton, Kev Oldroyd, Shaun Fearn, Brett Canham and Graham Shannon.

It is also a steak night in the club bar so why not pop along for some protein and a cracking game of rugby.

There is once again, no rugby at Silver Royd tomorrow; however the Vikings are in action on the road at Acklam leaving at 10.45am for a 1pm kick-off.

The RBS Six Nations Championship continues tomorrow with England v Italy and Ireland v France kicking off at 2.30pm and 5pm respectively.

I got it all wrong as far as the Wales-England game was concerned last weekend but my forecast of wins for Ireland and France was on the money.

I fancy England and Ireland who are both at home and despite their disappointment at the Millennium last Friday evening, I fancy Wales, unbeaten in Scotland since 2007, to bounce back and edge the fast-improving Scots at Murrayfield on Sunday.
