The men from Sandhill Lane have had a season of mixed fortunes, very much like the Seasiders, and until last week’s 31-29 defeat of bottom club Pontefract, had won only twice in their previous eight games.

However both wins were noteworthy, namely an 18-8 success at Bridlington on the last day of January and the 22-14 home defeat of Malton & Norton on February 28 ending a run of 18 unbeaten games by the visitors.

Skipper Tom Ratcliffe’s men started Scarborough’s league campaign at Selby back in September and came away from Sandhill Lane with a narrow but well-deserved 32-30 win thanks to tries from Joe Marshall, Billy Parker and Tomasz Chadwick, who added 18 points with the boot.

Centre Pete Turner (2) and full-back Josh Cruise were the Selby tryscorers with Cruise kicking another 15 points.

Last season Selby won home and away in this fixture but in the semi-final of the Yorkshire Shield in March last year Scarborough came away from Sandhill Lane with a 36-33 win thanks to tries from Harry Domett, Benji Cottle (2) and Phil Watson; they were also awarded a penalty try: Tom Ratcliffe converted four and added a penalty.

Last Saturday’s game against Heath was somewhat spoiled by a horribly gusty wind that changed direction several times, however a couple of Harry Domett tries and one apiece for Martin Robinson and Eamon Chapman saw coach Lee Douglas’ charges to a 20-12 bonus points win.

In the absence of Billy Parker, Joe Marshall plays at centre while up-front hooker Ian Williams, who has recovered from tonsilitis, joins Paul Taylor and Mark Hopper in the front row.

Jordi Wakeham, Taylor Smith and Wesley Langkilde are on the bench.

Games between Scarborough and Selby are often high-scoring affairs so I’m looking forward to a cracker tomorrow.

The Vikings are also in action as they travel to Selby.

Silver Royd will be a busy place this weekend with the seventh annual Scarborough RUFC/Breakaway travel mini-rugby festival.
