Scarborough & District Sports Council chairman Chris Rhodes paid tribute to the area’s sporting talent after Monday night’s 2012 Sports Awards.
Over 400 crammed into the Ocean Room at The Spa for the sports council’s annual awards ceremony, and Rhodes paid homage all who were nominated for the prestigious awards.
Rhodes said: “It was a fantastic night. To get 400 people down is amazing.
“We have potential Olympic champions in so many categories across the board, it just shows how much sporting talent there is in Scarborough.
“It has been a great year in sport, hopefully the Olympic legacy will continue, there will be much more interest in sport and more people taking different sports up.”
Tom Ratcliffe picked up the Top Male Achiever honours after his superb debut season playing rugby union for Scarborough RUFC in Yorkshire One before helping rugby league side Scarborough Pirates to comfortably win the Yorkshire Men’s Division Four title.
Tom said: “Personally its been a really good year, I’ve really enjoyed my first year in Scarborough. The rugby union and the Pirates boys have helped me settle, not only in playing sport, but also in the town.
“It is a really big honour to have won this and to have achieved so much in a year. I’d like to thank all the boys for helping me to do what I do.”
Bronwen Owen won the Top Female Achiever Award to add to her Junior Sports Girl Under-16s success.
