TOMASZ CHADWICK: Awards recognition for Ben

Ben Martin won the under-18 junior sports boy award, with his teammate Joe Marshall coming runner-up.

Both of these young players have bags of potential - having played first team rugby for the club at the age of 17, but they are also very humble and very likeable characters around the club.

Sean Mould and Tom Anderson were both nominated for best under-15s junior sports boy, and our senior ladies side the Valkyries were nominated in the category, senior team of the year.

The club itself was also nominated for Community Sports Club of the year.

I’m sure with the way this season has gone, there will be plenty more nominees from Scarborough’s junior sides in the future.

Last week Scarborough RUFC hosted the annual Scarborough – Ryedale play-off finals for years eight, nine and 10.

Unfortunately St Augustine’s were well beaten by Ryedale in both the year nine and 10 age groups, but Scarborough College put in a fantastic display of attacking rugby, beating Lady Lumley’s to progress through to the Yorkshire Finals.

It’s always nice to see ex-players from the club continuing to coach the sport, and Wayne Adams (former first-team player) is certainly doing a wonderful job with the side.

Everyone at Scarborough RUFC and I’m sure the town, wishes this young side all the best for their regional tournament in the near future.

This week Scalby school’s year seven side will be taking on Ryedale in their play-off final, in the hopes of following Scarborough College into the next round of the Yorkshire schools finals.

The very best of luck to this team too.

On Sunday of last week, while the minis were back training at home, our under-17s side took on Wensleydale in one of the last rounds of the league season.

As always, the side put on a great display of rugby for all those watching, coming out winners in a huge 40-29 scoreline.

The side is in its last stages of junior rugby and all the players will be welcome to join Scarborough’s senior sides at the season’s end.

It’s always nice for our players to know that they never have to stop playing if they don’t want to.

Scarborough RUFC will always cater for any player of any age and any gender, and that is something we will always be proud to offer.

This Sunday our minis will be training at home, and we have matches for most of our junior sides.

Our girls sides will be playing away at Goole in a tournament against other teams from around Yorkshire.

Our under-15s and under-14s will be away at Hull and our under-16s side will be at home against Driffield.

Some of you may know that at every first-team fixture at home, one player from our minis section is asked to be a mascot for the game.

Every home game we rotate the team that gets to select our Active Youth Trainer of the week.

Time and time again, coaches overlook their own sons and daughters for this accolade in the interests of fairness.

However, this week the club wanted to reward all the young players of coaches by inviting every single one to a pre-match dinner and to act as joint mascots for the fixture.

It’s not the easiest thing to be coached by a parent – and it’s also not the easiest thing to coach your child.

Being able to offer all coaches and all their sons and daughters the chance to attend this occasion is certainly something the club will always be happy to do.

This coming Sunday is also Mothering Sunday, so I wanted to send a big thank you to all of the mums that have some involvement with the club.

Whether they be our team managers, coaches, those that take pictures, or those that drop off and pick their kids up so that they can continue to play at Scarborough RUFC. and we offer our heartfelt gratitude to you all and I hope you have a well earned, wonderful day.
