The opening evening concert on Monday June 6 is designed to present in the one show as many aspects as possible of the band’s repertoire of popular light music.

The programme starts with the rhythms of the Can-Can and finishes with the romantic melodies of Rachmaninov’s 2nd Piano Concerto, played by musical director Paul Laidlaw.

Musical theatre is represented by tunes from The Sound of Music and My Fair Lady, balanced by some dance band numbers.

The variety of music continues with the rDambusters March contrasting the melodies from Cavalleria Rusticana.

The first half ends with the drum beat of Ravel’s Bolero. The evening is a showcase of all that the Orchestra does so well – playing the very best of light music.

Thursday evening – June 9 – sees the first of the season’s gala concerts.

This will be an event marking the Queen’s 90th birthday, and heralding London’s weekend of celebrations with Trooping the Colour and the Street Party on the Mall.

All the music will have links to the Queen both as a person and as a monarch.

Much has been made on television and in the national press recently of the discovery of a piece of music which the young Princess Elizabeth requested to be played at her 18th birthday party. Dusk by Armstrong Gibbs has been found in the Spa Orchestra’s library and will feature in Thursday’s programme.

Another discovery is that Albert Ketelbey, one of the Spa audience’s favourite composers, created a piece in 1932 especially for
the Princess’s sixth th birthday, and this will also
receive a rare performance in the concert.

To accompany the music throughout the evening, the film screen will show images of the Queen’s life from her birth, through the wartime years, her coronation and many other aspects of her life and reign to the present day.

All in all, a unique occasion presented by Scarborough’s very own Spa Orchestra, the UK’s only remaining professional seaside orchestra.

Tickets for the Spa Orchestra’s summerseason are now on sale priced from £6 to £11, with children going free with a paying adult and a ‘pay what you think’ on a Sunday afternoon. Tickets on 01723 821888.
