Meeting to be held on castle

A PUBLIC meeting is expected to be held next month to plan the future of the historic Ayton Castle.

The Scarborough Council-owned late 14th century castle is a Grade I listed building and one of 60 listed buildings and ancient monuments in the Scarborough area said to be at risk of sustaining significant damage in the 2010 Heritage at Risk report.

The list was compiled after the most in-depth study ever undertaken into the state of Britain’s historic treasures.

Adrian Perry, chairman of the Scarborough and District Civic Society, said a recent meeting on the castle concluded with the suggestion that a Friends’ Group should be formed, with a meeting to be held in February.
