Rehearsals are under way for the Importance of Being Earnest – which will see out the odl year and herald in the new at the Stephen Joseph.
Former Coronation Street star Becky Hindley will play the pivotal role of Lady Bracknell – whose best line is ‘A handbag!’ at teh discovery of where Earnest was found.
Oscar Widle’s play is set in refined Victorian society. Jack is in love with Gwendolen, Algernon is in love with Cecily and both women are in love with Ernest – who does not really exist.
This is the basis for a dazzling play on words, mistaken identity and a comedy of manners. Artistic director of the theatre Chris Monks said: “London and country collide in Wilde’s most popular play. Full of sparkling wit, provocative remarks and satirical humour, this is a trivial comedy for serious people.”
It runs from December 18 to January 5.
The venue’s other seasonal show is Cinderella. This version of the fairytale is set by the sea with Cinders being a fiesty young woman in love with a surfer. It runs from November 27 to December 15.
