A GIGANTIC sculpture will be visiting Scarborough to make the North Bay its temporary home later this week.
Freddie Gilroy and the Belsen Stragglers, by County Durham artist Ray Lonsdale, will be beside the Oasis cafe from Thursday for a month.
It is based on a retired miner who was one of the first soldiers to relieve the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp at the end of the Second World War.
The artist said: “This piece is almost a war memorial as it depicts the lives of all those who suffered during the world wars.”
A similar sculpture will also be displayed at Whitby’s West Pier for the same time period.
