Scarborough Jazz Festival has had some fantastic big bands in the past – including the BBC Big Band – and this year is no exception.
The festival takes place at the Spa and runs from Friday September 27 to Sunday September 29.
First up on Friday evening is the Beats and Pieces Big Band – fast becoming one of the country’s most talked about groups.
The band’s fourteen members are drawn from some of the most exciting and in demand young musicians in the UK today.
Making waves in the North is The Al Wood Nine which kicks off Sunday afternoon. This superb new band has a dream line-up of some of the best mainstream and bop players in the region .
Expect strains of Count Basie, Art Pepper, Gerry Mulligan, Stan Kenton, Benny Carter, Duke Ellington, Cedar Walton and ‘Dizzy’ Gillespie.
Another intriguing twist to much loved standards follows later on Sunday afternoon. Ellington in Anticipation is anew project led by Mark Lockheart and inspired by the music of Duke Ellington.
The festival full line-up also includes compere: Alan Barnes, Courtney Pine, Kyle Eastwood Quartet, Adam Glasser Quartet, Cubana Bop plays West Side Story, Ian Shaw, Jim Hart Quartet, Matthew Halsall Sextet and Tristan Mailliot Trio with Anita Wardell and Gareth Lochrane.
