The Firebird is an exciting combo playing contemporary jazz, exciting funky grooves and their own modern take on standards. They play Scarborough Jazz at the Cask on Wednesday March 18.
They deliver enough sophistication for any jazz audience but with a sense of groove that everyone will enjoy. Leader trumpeter Ian Chalk, a long time favourite at
Scarborough Jazz, is joined by top regional players Martin Longhawn, piano, John Marley, bass, and Tim Carter on drums.
Ian Chalk said:”Musically we are influenced by everything we have ever heard as jazz musicians tend to soak up whatever music is around them but currently we are listening to, and performing music by, Wynton
Marsalis, Terence Blanchard, Wayne Shorter, Roy Hargrove and Dean Taba. But we perform a number of original compositions in a range of styles from driving swing to grooves with a hint of hip-hop.
“We create music of sufficient complexity to appeal to a contemporary jazz listener while being accessible to a broader audience.’
The gig starts at 8.45 pm and entry is £6.
