Toby Greenwood is a composer and a tenor soprano saxophonist and will be appearing at the Cask for a set next Wednesday from 8.45pm.

In June last year he made a highly successful appearance with his band – We Free Kings – but this time he will be backed by the Mike Gordon Trio.

He is the son of a multi-instrumentalist and has been a professional sax player since the age of 16. Although reared on jazz he has, until recently, made his living principally within the funk and R&B session scene.

Mike, the organiser of Jazz @ the Cask, says: “Having worked in brass sections of just about every size and permutation you can think of, he makes particular use of this invaluable experience when arranging the brass in ‘We Free Kings’, exploiting the different blends and tonal possibilities available.

“Toby has contributed material to many of the groups he has worked with and enjoys the opportunity to explore and develop a compositional style that has been praised for it’s maturity and described as evocative and visual.”

Toby says his playing influences include Sonny Rollins and Wayne Shorter.
