ROYAL favourite popstar Ellie Goulding will star at Scarborough’s Open Air Theatre next month, the Evening News can reveal.
Fresh from her performance at the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, the 24-year-old has been booked to appear at the theatre on Saturday June 11 – less than a week after Sir Elton John’s sell-out show at the same venue.
And Welsh singer Aled Jones has been confirmed as one of the artists for Scarborough’s Last Night At The Proms, to be headlined by Dame Kiri Te Kanawa on August 28.
Brit award-winning singer-songwriter Ellie was personally asked by newly-weds Prince William and Kate to sing at their wedding reception. Their first dance was to her rendition of Your Song by Sir Elton John, which reached number two in the UK Singles Chart.
Tony Viney, founder of Scarborough-based organisers Entourage Global, said a proportion of tickets for the show will be held back specifically for local people.
He added: “This is a coup for the town. Ellie Goulding is absolutely huge right now.
“She has a string of top five hits, a number one album and is the most recent British act to break America following her huge success on Saturday Night Live.
“We are extremely proud to be working with her.
“Every show Ellie has done has resulted in a sell out; we don’t expect this to be any different.
“Her last show sold out in a single morning.”
Support for the concert will be provided by X-Factor finalists Belle Amie – featuring Scarborough’s own Sophia Wardman – and DJ Lebrosk. “We are also pleased to be able to bring Belle Amie home,” said Mr Viney. “Band member Sophia Wardman is from the town and I think this is a great way to show her how proud we are of what she achieved in last year’s X Factor.”
Sam Shrouder, from Apollo Leisure and Resorts, said: “To bring in an event of this sort really complements the programme. It is crucial to us to appeal to a younger audience and we are working together to make it the massive success that it deserves to be. It’s a massive event for Scarborough and it needs the support of the local community.”
David Archer, Scarborough Council’s strategic director, added: “It is fantastic that Scarborough has been able to attract such a fabulous singer-songwriter and it is a testament to the increasing popularity of the Open Air Theatre as a venue that stars want to perform at.
“The theatre is helping to build on Scarborough’s excellent reputation for providing a wide variety of musical entertainment throughout the year and this latest announcement is great news.”
• Tickets for the event were available from today at www.ticketline.co.uk and they will also be on sale from the Open Air Theatre box office from Saturday morning.
