Terri-Ann’s singing rolls back the years

Terri-Ann Prendergast turns on her backing track, breaks into Bye Bye Blackbird and the lounge of the Eagle View Care Home is transformed.

The residents, many of whom suffer from dementia, start to sing, some dance and others play the instruments Terri-Ann has handed out.

For the 23-year-old from Cayton, this – entertaining in care and residential homes – is the day job, a business set up with help from the Prince’s Trust.

It is, however, more than a job. “It is about them, not me,” said Terri-Ann. “I like them to join in, dance and play the instruments.

“It brightens my day as well as that of the residents,” she said. “It is so rewarding to see the interaction, especially from those who suffer from dementia.”

With a touch of persuasion and a radiant smile, Terri-Ann soon has one resident on his feet, swaying to Singing in the Rain, followed by Ain’t Misbehavin’.

Her songs work a charm round the room, people singing along or up and dancing. Terri-Ann themes her entertainment, she has a 1930s set and rock ’n’ roll and is planning
a Christmas

The manager of the Eagle View in Phoenix Drive, Scarborough, is Jane Ward. She also cites the benefits of visits like those made by Terri-Ann.

“The residents love things like this, they can join in and it is good exercise for them,” she said.

Terri-Ann is a singer-songwriter who performs in pubs in the area as well as nursing homes in Scarborough, Leeds and Harrogate.

Her latest single is Smile Again, produced by Ollie Green, who has worked with Lady Ga Ga and Carly Rae Jepson.

Terri-Annlives with mum and dad Donna and Michael, a postman.

She went to St Augustine’s School and was a member of Ann Taylor’s School of Dance in Scarborough.

She has been singing in Scarborough since she was 16 and did her first gig at the Old Vic, opposite Scarborough Railway Station.

She has performed at Staxtonbury and acted with York Theatre Royal.

Now, as well as doing “the day job” she is concentrating on getting her music to a wider audience, through concerts and via the internet.
