Appearing for only the second time at The Cask on August 7 is the sextet We Free Kings led by saxophonist and composer Toby Greenwood.

With Toby on tenor and soprano saxes are Kevin Holborough – trombone and Mark Chandler – flugelhorn.

To match that front-line is an equally sparkling rhythm section with Jamil Sheriff – piano, Garry Jackson– double bass and Dave Walsh on drums.

They will play music written and arranged by Toby with strong evocative melodic themes.

Some of this material can be heard on their debut album ‘A Dove In Every Pocket which was shortlisted for the Jazz Yorkshire Album of the Year Award.

The music displays tangible influences from Latin American and South African jazz, with echoes of Monk and Mingus.

Incidentally, the band take their name from the famous album of the same name by Rahsaan Roland Kirk.

Tickets are £7 on the door. Advance tickets at £6 are available from The Cask, Record Revivals and The Bookshelf on Victoria Road. The music starts at 8.45pm.
