Whitby Community College student Emily Barrett plays Miranda, the ‘teenager in Love’ in Return to Forbidden Planet.
She is one of the cast from the Area Musical Theatre Company preparing to put on the musical at the Pavilion next year.
Emily said: “I am thrilled and a little bit nervous at the prospect of my first principal role. “
Playing alongside her is Daniel Green from Scarborough who music fans may recognise as the lead vocalist in the band Friday Street— featured at the Staxtonbury Music Festival.
Daniel plays the ship’s cook, a hopeless romantic
who falls in love with Miranda and declares he “Ain’t Gonna Wash For A Week” after she kisses him.
Bob Carlton, the creator of this cult musical adds both literary and wacky dimensions by making 95 per cent of the dialogue lines from Shakespeare; such as:
Friends, crewmen, passengers lend me your ears.
Captain Tempest welcomes you aboard.
As the spaceship Albatross dodges flaming asteroids, the crew break into “Great Balls of Fire”. So the show truly becomes a Rock ’n’ Roll Shakespeare Musical in outer space .
It is on at the Pavilion from Wednesday March 26 to Saturday March 29, daily at 7.30pm with a matinee on the Saturday at 2pm.
