REVIEW: Magic Mike at Scarborough Spa

It may well have been a damp evening in Scarborough, but Magic Mike’s colourful summer show brightened up proceedings at the Spa Ocean Room.

Despite having lived in the area all my life I have never seen one of Magic Mike’s shows or children parties, although my daughters, five and eight, had both seen him at their friends’ parties.

A mix of locals and tourists settled down into the relaxed, informal surroundings of the Ocean Room, the show flying into action with an energetic routine by the Hey Presto Dancers.

Mike then invited the first of many young volunteers to help him with his wide array of magic tricks which wowed and amused the audience in equal measures, but it was his ventriloquist act which seemed to tickle the funnybones of most of the audience, from the cheeky Oscar the parrot to the newcomer Carlos from Brazil to the mischievous Chuck.

The funniest moments of the show probably came from the way in which Mike’s interactions with the audience led to him having to improvise, especially the moment when Carlos was blindfolded and had to ‘guess’ through mind control what animal a young volunteer had drawn.

The audience, and the magician, were in stitches as the Brazilian took several attempts to figure out the animal in question.

The excellent singing of assistant Tilly also helped to keep the entertainment levels up as did the interval dance routines for the youngsters and strong performances from the Hey Presto Dancers.

At £7 a ticket for a two-hour show, starting at 7pm on August 17 and August 24, this is an ideal option to keep the younger members of the family amused during what can prove to be a challenging time of year for parents.

Children under two are admitted free to the show.

I will certainly be bringing my girls along to another of Mike’s shows in the future, they loved every minute and were still chuckling as we left the theatre.
