Trumpeter and guitarist Thom Whitworth is an established favourite at Scarborough Jazz at The Cask. He makes a welcome return on Wednesday April 10.

Thom has the ability to switch from trumpet to guitar, demonstrating high levels of technical and improvisational skill on both instruments.

He has played a number of jazz festivals including Alford, Grimsby, Scarborough, Cleethorpes, Hull and Lincoln. He has won various accolades which include the Perrier Jazz Award semi finalist and winner of the Kenny Baker Memorial Competition.

Thom began playing trumpet at school. His ability and promise quickly noticed, he was recommended to study piano as a second instrument in order to deepen his understanding of theory and harmony. Not having room for a piano, Thom chose guitar, teaching himself through books and listening to records.

His early exposure to jazz was through the record collections of his father and brother, prompting Thom to change his trumpet sound from classical to cool. For this gig, Thom will be backed by The Mike Gordon Trio. Admission £3. Mmusic starts at 8.45pm.
