Paintings by Moorland Artist Lewis Creighton to go on show in Kirkbymoorside
Work by Yorkshire landscape artist Lewis Creigton – known as the Moorland Artist – will go on show during the Kirbymoorside Music Festival later this year.
Creighton was born in 1918 and grew up in Appleton-le-Moors, situated on the southern edge of the North York Moors National Park.

While little is known about his childhood, the surroundings of the North York Moors influenced his artistic inspiration and interpretation in later life.
He was a Spitfire pilot in the Battle of Britain, a musician in a band, an astronomer and philosopher
Creighton’s paintings will be on display, on loan from family members and local residents; brought together for the first time by Kirkbymoorside Town Council and exhibited over the duration of the Kirkbymoorside Music Festival weekend.
Lewis’s granddaughter, Lucy Walker, said “My Grandfather’s work is widely collected and the family are grateful to the organisers of the Kirkbymoorside Music Festival and the town council for providing this unique opportunity to share the paintings he created in the area he adored so much.
“I look forward to meeting visitors and discussing his work at the exhibition.”
The Lewis Creighton exhibition is on at the Moorside Room, Church Street, Kirkbymoorside, on Friday, July 31 from 2pm to 5.30 pm; Saturday August 1 from 10am to 5.30pm and Sunday, August 2 from 10am to 3pm.
Exhibition organiser and town councillor Chris Dowie said: “If anyone owns a Lewis Creighton artwork and wishes to include their painting in this special exhibition, please contact me.”
