Bridlington's Bondville Model Village a ‘vital sanctuary for mental health’

Bondville Model Village is positioning itself as ‘a vital sanctuary for mental health’, offering families a ‘digital detox’ in an increasingly screen-fixated world as it opens its doors to the public today (Thursday, March 19).

Home to over 200 tiny buildings and 700 handcrafted figures, the beloved attraction has become more than just a tourist stop; it is a community-driven project proven to boost the wellbeing of both its visitors and its dedicated team of volunteers.

In a world of constant connectivity, Bondville offers a rare opportunity to slow down, says owner Rachel Hill, a former nursery owner of 16 years.

Rachel said: “Life has become too busy for many of us.

“Bondville has a wonderful atmosphere that encourages people to pause.

“It’s rewarding to see children exploring without screens, discovering tiny stories – from a miniature funeral to scenes depicting homelessness or disability – that spark real-world conversations within families.”

Following a successful 2025 season that saw over 30,000 visitors, the village has introduced new features to enhance its ‘restorative’ reputation:

•The Reflection Bench: A dedicated spot for quiet contemplation overlooking the miniature harbour.

•Interactive Storytelling: New QR codes providing backstories to the tiny residents.

•The Harbour and Train: Fully restored for the 2026 launch to enchant the next generation of tiny ‘explorers’.

Manager Helen Dyer added: “When it’s quiet first thing in the morning and you can hear the sea, the place just envelops you. Visitors tell us it feels like a warm embrace. It’s an old-fashioned activity, and we need that now more than ever.”
