The discount food store is understood to be Lidl, which has applied for a premises licence to the council’s Licensing Committee.

One of the reports attached to the original planning application included that the unit with the attached garden centre was intended for B&M.

The application is recommended for approval but with 33 conditions attached.

The Promenades Shopping Centre has lodged three letters of objection to the plans which raise a catalogue of concerns regarding the potential impact on trade for shops in the town centre and The Promenades.

These include the damage done to Bridlington’s convenience retail turnover by coronavirus - which the centre estimates at a loss of £10.2 million - and the suggestion that the committee should defer approval until the applicant can justify the plans in light of the pandemic.

New River Retail has also submitted a letter highlighting “the need for the centre of Bridlington to remain the priority, the fragility of the centre and the opportunities that exist for further joint working which could see this development located in a way that better enhances Bridlington town centre and a non-retail scheme delivered on this site”.

Four more letters of objection have been submitted along with four letters supporting the application.

The site is next to the Grade II Listed Bridlington Railway Station and would require the demolition of the excursion platform, which dates back to 1892.

A second planning application has been made for this which is also recommended for approval, subject to conditions.
