Scarborough fish and chip shops back in business

One of Scarborough residents’ favourite dishes is back on the menu as the town’s fish and chip shops start ‘frying tonight’ again.

The businesses’ owners have put in social distancing measures and are operating within Government guidelines on safety.

In some cases menus are not as wide-ranging as usual and those with seating areas, inside or out, have not re-opened them.

Rennards in Castle Road, owned by Terry Cook, has been open almost throughout the pandemic with Prime Minister Boris Johnson announcing lockdown on Monday March 23.

Only one to two people are allowed in the chippy at one time and its outside tables cannot be used.

The shop is open seven days a week:

Monday to Thursday and Sunday noon to 7pm and Friday and Saturday from noon to 7.30pm.

On Friday, Saturday and Sunday it also offers a delivery service from 1pm to 6pm. Call: 07721 947773.

NHS workers, on production of their ID, geta 25 per cent discount.

Small Fry in North Street opened earlier this week. The shop has been run by sisters Karen and Jayne Holmes for 39 years.

“It was with great reluctance that we closed but we could not get the produce.

“This is the longest lay-off of our lives. We are thrilled to be back for our customers, who are so loyal,” said Karen.

Small Fry is operating a take-away service from Tuesdays to Fridays from 11.30am to 1.30pm and from 4.15pm to 7.15pm.

It is open Saturdays from 11.30am to 1.30pm.

North Bay Fisheries in Columbus Ravine is open seven days a week from 4.30pm to 7.30pm.

It has a sign on its window laying out social distancing measures which include two people allowed in the shop at one time, no groups, no couples and no families. It also states card and contactless payment is preferred.

Crossgates Fish and Chips in Avocet Shopping Centre, Curlew Drive, is open for a take-away service each Friday and Saturday from 11.30am to 7.30pm. Owner Kevin Lane, his wife

“We decided to give it a try one weekend and it proved really popular,” said Kevin.
