Located in St Thomas Street in the town, Furniture Works provides Scarborough and the surrounding area with a valued place of learning and a place where quality furniture can be donated, upcycled and sold, rather than going to local landfill sites.

Co-founder Michelle Padron-Kitching said: “Furniture Works offers a space to show off the creations of our learners. Our remit includes teaching and sharing practical skills and one of the key areas is the restoration of donated furniture. The products of their labours are for sale in our retail space in St Thomas Street, Scarborough.

“We first opened in the autumn of 2020 and we had a very good response to our latest project before the second lockdown took place.

“Furniture Works is linked with Futureworks NY, a not-for-profit organisation offering help to local learners from school age and older.”

Sarah Thornton, fellow co-founder, said: “Our learners and their mentors do an amazing job transforming tired pieces of furniture into something that can find its ‘forever home’. So, we put our learners’ skills to good use, we prevent items heading to landfill, and provide essential quality furniture at an affordable price.”

Following the strict lockdown and following government guidance, Furniture Works will reopen on April 12.

Michelle said: “We did have a great success story between the twom lockdowns with a huge donation of furniture from the Whitby area after the donator saw the story in the Whitby Gazette.

“We are very much looking forward to greeting our customers again once we can reopen in April.”

Additional services Furniture Works include bespoke upcycling of a customer’s beloved furniture items.
