Robert Goodwill has thrown his support behind The Scarborough News’ Time to #supportlocal campaign, appealing for shoppers to make use of their local stores.

People might have done a lot of online shopping while the shops were shut but I would strongly encourage them to turn off their computers and turn left on to the high street,” he said.

He expressed his delight that Debenhams has chosen to re-open its Scarborough store next week, despite the major department store announcing it will not be re-opening branches in several other parts of the country.

Mr Goodwill warned that people will be met with a different shopping experience than there was previously because of social distancing restrictions, and they may need to show extra patience, but that should not put them off.

“People have been shopping in supermarkets so they know about social distancing in a retail environment,” he said.

“Our high streets are very important indeed and now is the time for us to support those shops.”
