Organised by The Family Business Community, the event at The Royal Armouries in Leeds brought together an audience of more than 300, including family business leaders, their teams, and those that support the sector.

Having been shortlisted earlier this year, the announcement marked a proud moment for the Off the Scale Castleton team.

The award acknowledged family-owned businesses propelled by a clear purpose and a profound dedication to their community.

Delighted owner Lizzie Watson said: “Winning this award was so unexpected, we were nominated for the People’s Choice Award by an anonymous nominee back in June and decided why not put ourselves forward for a few other categories.

"We were astonished to be named as finalists in three categories and didn’t dare to dream that we might win.

"Our tiny shop on the moors, serving our local community, has just won a wonderful accolade that celebrates everything we strive for at Off the Scale.

"We couldn’t be prouder and cannot wait to celebrate with the community!"

Off the Scale Castleton - lovingly known by locals as Lizzie's Shop – was founded by Lizzie, in 2022 after her and her husband Mark bought the shop – previously a butcher’s – from Mark's parents in 2018.

Mark, a builder, undertook the massive task of renovating the shop, with help from his brother Stephen and nephews Aaron and Liam and in April 2022, it opened its doors.

Presented by Category Judge Chris Salt, of the Candlelighters Trust, he said of Off the Scales’s win: “This category was tough to judge as they are good businesses, doing great things and passionate about what they do.

"What came up regularly was that the businesses didn't want to achieve ‘growth at all costs’ and that they were focused on people over profit.

"Our Grassroots winner has their fingers in many pies to support the business, and focused on working with the community, with their family ethos at the heart of everything they do for others.”

The evening was hosted by food writer and broadcaster Nigel Barden, alongside event co-founders Dave Clarkson, of Whitby, and Sue Howorth, who expressed their pride in the event's success.
