As many businesses are able to reopen this weekend, the doors of many others will remain shut, despite the government easing coronavirus restrictions.

Beauty salons, gyms, soft play centres and tattoo studios are among those who have been told they must stay closed and do not yet have a date for when they can trade again.

Tammy Hollis, owner of The Lotus Beauty on Columbus Ravine, Scarborough, expressed her frustration.

Because of the nature of their work and the potential for skin-to-skin contact, she said beauty salons are already run to an extremely high hygiene standard.

“Everything they want us to have in place, we already have in place,” she said.

“For us not to be able to open while hairdressers can, it’s not right.”

The mum-of-three said salon owners like her have been left without any income and she has a long waiting list of customers keen to be seen.

Expecting to be opening this weekend, she had people booked in from then and right through August, but now she will have to delay those bookings.
