Online success for Scarborough joke shop
A much-loved seaside shop in Scarborough has been recognised by both eBay and Shopify after hitting an incredible 100,000 online orders on each platform.
The Scarborough Joke & Magic Shop, a fixture just off the seafront since the 1980s, is famous for its shelves stacked with pranks, novelty gifts, and professional magic props.
However, behind the whoopee cushions and magic wands lies a serious success story.
While many high street shops have struggled in recent years, owner Miles Jackson has transformed the family-run business into a national e-commerce success across multiple platforms, including eBay, Shopify, Amazon, Etsy, and TikTok Shop.

“To reach 100,000 orders on both eBay and Shopify is something we never imagined when we first starting selling online,” said Miles. “We started as a small seaside shop, serving families on holiday, and now we’re shipping products across the UK and beyond. It shows there’s still a huge appetite for fun, laughter, and a little magic – even in today’s digital world.”
The shop has become a case study in how small, independent retailers can thrive by embracing technology while staying true to their roots.
“It’s not just a shop – it’s part of Scarborough’s identity,” said one regular customer. “But it’s amazing to see how far they’ve taken it. To win awards for 100,000 orders online proves a small business from our town can compete on the world stage.”
Looking ahead, the Scarborough Joke and Magic Shop plans to continue expanding its online presence, develop exclusive new products, and keep Scarborough firmly on the map as the home of fun and mischief.
