Bridlington community car scheme fully operational

Bridlington Local Community Lift (BLCL) is now fully operational, providing essential transport for residents who need help getting to important medical appointments.

The community car scheme, developed over recent months, is already proving to be a lifeline for people in the Bridlington area who struggle to access reliable transport.

Jane Evison, representing community transport, said: “We now have several volunteer drivers who are already providing transport, and more applicants are currently being processed.

“The feedback we’re receiving from passengers has been incredibly positive, which is so encouraging – but we urgently need more volunteer drivers so we can support even more people who rely on us to reach vital medical appointments.”

Two recent passengers, Elizabeth Crowe and Nicola Wragg, shared their experiences.

One passenger, who travelled to Malton Hospital, described her journey as “very pleasant” and praised her driver as “extremely delightful”.

Although the driver did not stay during her appointment, he provided his phone number and returned promptly as soon as she called.

Another passenger, travelling to a Bridlington GP appointment, reported that her driver was on time, friendly, and supportive throughout.

Both passengers said they would certainly use the service again.

Demand for BLCL’s service is increasing rapidly. Every new volunteer driver directly increases the number of people who can attend essential medical appointments – appointments many would otherwise miss.

A spokesperson said: “Volunteers use their own cars, receive 45p per mile to cover fuel costs, choose when they are available, and receive full support from the BLCL team. Even a small amount of time can make a meaningful difference.
