A housing association grant is helping to fund the work of volunteers who are striving to keep their North Yorkshire seaside town free from litter.

When Mick Couzens first moved to Scarborough six years ago, he set out to visit wildlife havens such as Burton Riggs Nature Reserve and Raincliffe Woods and became determined to do something about the litter he spotted.

As he went round picking up rubbish a number of impressed locals vowed to join him and Keep Scarborough Tidy was born.

The group is now 60 strong and has expanded to educate youngsters, help the homeless and provide fresh air and social contact for those at risk of isolation.

Now, a £350 grant from Broadacres Housing Association’s Community Development Fund will help fund the work of the group across the town.

“We are all volunteers and so grants of this nature are always gratefully received and put to good use,” said Mick.

Mick built up good contacts with Scarbrough Council, now part of the new North Yorkshire Council, and will alert them to any graffiti the pickers come across as well as leaving litter sacks at designated points for refuge crews to pick up and dispose of. Mick also notes any rough sleepers they come across so agencies can offer help.

Mick has also expanded into visiting schools to educate children on the danger litter poses to wildlife and organising fun playground games where primary school youngsters pick up litter and then organise into the correct recycling categories.

“After every pick we all go for coffee, cake and a chance to chat,” said Mick, who Chairs the group.

“We’ve had bereaved people come along and make new friends and others just looking for the chance to enjoy the fresh air, meet people and do something positive with their time.”
