The last Ladies Lifeboat Luncheon Club meeting before the summer recess was held on Wednesday, April 16 at the North Star in Flamborough.

The main purpose of the meeting was to hand over a cheque to the Bridlington Lifeboat crew member, Aleksander Lurans, for £6791.69.

This amount was raised during the last financial year from a variety of fundraising events.

In her annual review, secretary Margaret Traves thanked the members for their support over the past year.

Thanks were also given to Anne Saunders for her outstanding contribution over the past six years as the club chair, successfully coordinating the club’s work with the Lifeboat Station events.

A spokesperson said: “Bridlington Lifeboat volunteer Aleksandrs Lurans delivered an interesting talk about his connection with the lifeboat which he joined as a volunteer three and a half years ago on the instigation of a work colleague.

“He has lived and worked as a mechanical engineer in Bridlington for 17 years having moved over to England with his family from Latvia. His professional skills have come in very useful as a volunteer crew member and his eventual aim is to become a mechanic on the large life boat, The Shannon.

“He went on to explain the training procedure for new members, which starts initially with training for the small boat that operates closer to the shore. This training encompasses learning a variety of skills before moving on to the more complex training procedures for the large boat.

“Training sessions take place every week usually at the station in Winter and outside in all weathers in Spring and Summer. Such a commitment requires support from the volunteers’ families and employers as shouts can take place at any time of the day or night.”

Aleks explained that the moneyraised by the club goes towards the cost of new equipment and clothing as well as training.

The cost of equipping a volunteer with the necessary clothing is about £1,800.

The club’s last coffee morning on Wednesday, April 1 raised £765.45 and it would like to thank everyone who attended for their generosity.

The fundraising events will continue throughout the Summer.
