Rescue teams presented with Chairman’s Award commendation
The Bridlington Coastguard Rescue Team was presented with a special commendation during the East Riding of Yorkshire Chairman’s Awards in Beverley.
The award was given to the team, alongside other emergency services, in recognition of the their response during the incident at Withernsea earlier this year.

A spokesperson for the Coastguard team said: “This commendation reflects the dedication, professionalism, and teamwork shown by everyone involved in responding to that incident. While the outcome of the job remains something we reflect on deeply, the recognition from the community means a great deal and stands as a testament to the commitment shown by all those who work to protect life along our coastline.
“Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of Sarah and Grace Keeling, and Mark Ratcliffe, and continue to be with them as they navigate the lasting impact of that day.
“We were humbled to stand alongside so many other blue light emergency services and lifeboat crews, whose ongoing dedication, courage, and service to our communities deserves equal recognition and respect.
"This award belongs to every member of the team and to all those who continue to answer the call, day and night.”
Two Bridlington RNLI volunteers, Sarah Berrey and Mike Patrick, who were serving onboard the Bridlington RNLI all‑weather lifeboat, Antony Patrick Jones, on 2 January 2026, attended the ceremony to accept the award on behalf of the charity and its volunteers.
Mike said: “This award is not about individuals, but about the collective efforts of volunteer RNLI crews from Bridlington, Withernsea and Skegness, the support of the wider station team, and the strength of the communities we serve.”
A commendation was presented posthumously to Mark Ratcliffe. Mark’s unwavering courage, deep sense of humanity, and sheer bravery in the face of danger will forever stand as a testament to true heroism. The award was collected by his son, Nigel.
Richard Shaw and Ellie Procter were also awarded commendations in recognition of the bravery they demonstrated under extremely challenging circumstances.
Chairman of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Councillor Liam Dealtry, said: “Following the tragedy at the start of the year in Withernsea I very much wanted, on behalf of the council, to recognise the bravery and dedication shown by three members of the public in particular but also the emergency services who attended throughout.”
