‘Beer goggles’ fun at school to illustrate the effects of alcohol

Mini Police Cadets at North Frodingham Primary School enjoyed finding out more about effects of alcohol when they tried out some ‘beer goggles’.

The session with Humberside Police focused on social awareness, including discussions around alcohol and drug misuse and the impact these substances can have – not only on appearance, but also on vital organs, brain function, and overall health.

Pupils also explored the effects of smoking and vaping on the body.

A Humberside Police spokesperson, via the force’s Facebook page, said: “Once the children had identified the various effects of alcohol on individuals, we carried out a fun and educational activity. First, pupils were asked to walk through cones and catch a ball as normal.

“They then repeated the same tasks while wearing special ‘beer goggles’, which simulate the feeling of being impaired by alcohol.

“Although the goggles caused plenty of laughter, the children quickly realised how much harder it was to complete simple tasks, recognising how fine motor skills and coordination are affected under the influence of alcohol.

“To end the session, even the teachers joined in! There were lots of giggles as they attempted the same challenges – although we suspect some of them may have been secretly practising beforehand!”
