Research shows that reading for fun seriously improves children’s lives and is the biggest indicator that a child will grow up to enjoy a happier and more successful future – even more than their family background or parents’ income.

However, only one in three children now say they enjoy reading, the lowest level since 2005, while just 41% of 0-4 year-olds and 36% of 5-7 year olds are regularly read to.

In addition, one million children don’t have a book of their own, and only 40% of parents say they enjoy reading to their children.

Young people are more likely to read if they see it as a fun, entertaining and social thing to do.

That’s what World Book Day is all about; inspiring them to see reading differently.

Charlie Dewhirst MP said: “Reading for fun is so important for children and young people, so I was very pleased to show my support at the World Book Day celebration in Parliament.

“Every parent who helped prepare a costume knows the excitement this day sparks in our children, and I hope this enthusiasm transfers to reading, too.”

Fiona Hickley, executive director of World Book Day, added: “World Book Day is a joyful and vibrant celebration of reading for fun, and it’s all about inspiring children to see reading differently.

“We’re delighted to have Charlie Dewhirst’s support to show children that reading can be exciting and something to enjoy rather than a chore.

“By taking away pressure and giving children the freedom to choose a book they want to read, we can show them that it is a fun, entertaining and social thing to do, and help them experience the life-changing benefits.”
