Pupils at Braeburn School embrace the outdoors in their new eco garden

Children at Braeburn Primary and Nursery Academy regularly spend time each week in timetabled outdoor learning slots, getting closer to nature and benefitting from being in the fresh air.

The school has its own outdoor activity leader, James Armstrong, and activities include tree planting, sunflower growing, birdbox building and leaf identification.

The children also help the community by litter collecting.

Deputy head teacher, Richard Crabtree said: "“We have a designated outdoor learning space, complete with wigwam.

"It’s all part of enriching children’s learning, and the bracing outdoors is a good way to help them stay fit and healthy.”

Over half of the children at school attend extra-curricular clubs each week, which focus on cricket, rounders, crafts, first aid and dance.

A link with GCHQ in Scarborough allows children to use their resources for Spy Club and there’s a computer coding club called ChromeZone.

Mr Crabtree said: “We’re proud of the wide range of activities here at Braeburn, there’s something for everyone.

“After all the confinement that came with lockdown, it’s brilliant to see children enjoying the fresh air with their friends.”
