Scarborough students celebrate GCSE results

St Augustine’s RC School saw 68% of pupils achieve 5 A*- C grades including English and Mathematics.

Pass rates of over 90% were achieved in all Sciences, English Literature, Art & Music.

Individual pupils did extremely well with three students, Joe Heynes, Brandon Lino and Lizzie Swift being awarded the new A* Distinction, which examiners can award to the most exceptional pupils for Further Mathematics.

Brandon Lino also gained 13 GCSEs at A* alongside his Distinction in Further Mathematics.

Dr Dianne Swiers, chair of governors, said: "Governors are exceptionally pleased with this year’s results which are testament to Mark Taylor’s leadership, outstanding teaching and the hard work of our students.

"Following our recent OFSTED inspection, which rated governance and leadership as outstanding, we are confident that the school will go from strength to strength."

At George Pindar School 66% of students achieved A* - C in English and 62% achieved A* - C in Mathematics.

The overall A* - C including English and Mathematics was an improvement on last year at 44% A* to C which is above the national floor target for both A* - C including English and Mathematics and the Governments new key measure of Progress 8 - which measures the progress of students across their best eight subjects.

There were some very good individual student performances – Charlotte Lester with 11A/A* and 1 B, Taylor Atkinson with 8A/A* and 4 B’s, Brandon Tipper with 8A/A* and 3 B’s and Josh Lever and Lee Pettitt who both achieved 7A/A* as well as 6 B’s for Lee and 5 B’s for Josh.

A spokesperson said: "While it is right to celebrate our students who have performed so well we shouldn’t forget the results of other students as none of them have been achieved easily and some have been achieved – as they always are – in very difficult circumstances."

Outgoing Headteacher John Senior said “Our target this year was 50% A* - C including English and Mathematics and it is disappointing – circumstances not withstanding – that we have fallen short – in the case of some individual student results by just one or two marks which will be even more disappointing for them.

"We have already identified some unusual results and – as has unfortunately been the case for a number of years – will be seeking remarks for some students work. As such our results will remain provisional until this process has been completed.

Looking to the future the school has been successful in recruiting not just a new headteacher - but new staff in some critical areas - and I am confident that our headline figures will continue to improve next year."

At Scarborough College Year 11 pupils from across North and East Yorkshire, in addition to boarding students from across the globe, achieved a tremendous 94% A* to C across all entries with 47% of all grades received being A* or A.

Four students scored straight A*s and As and no less than 13 separate subjects achieved a full 100% A* to C outcome.

Charles Ellison, the headmaster, commented: "Today's GCSE results are simply phenomenal and are testimony to years of determination and dedication by pupils who are aspirational and positive in all they do, inside and outside of the classroom."
