‘Woodland Wonderland’ library opens at Terrington Hall Prep School near Malton
Children at Terrington Hall Prep School are exploring a new ‘woodland’ library designed to bring the outside in and inspire them with the magic of reading.
The library, which opened this term, coincides with the National Year of Reading, a Department for Education initiative aimed at making reading a part of everyday life and learning.

It was the brainchild of Head of English Rebecca Thomas, who envisaged a world of imagination, curiosity and calm.
Art teacher Millie MacNicol, who is also a practising artist, brought that vision to life by installing a ‘tree’ and painting woodland birds and creatures across the windows and walls.

Every class at the school, which teaches 3-13 year-olds in the Howardian Hills, near Malton, has weekly sessions in the library.
Pupils in Years 5–8 can also visit throughout the day to choose new books.
The library has zoned areas to ease navigation and link with the school’s Accelerated Reader programme, which monitors and manages pupils’ independent reading practice and comprehension.
Mrs Thomas said: “Over the past year, we’ve seen a remarkable increase in both the quality and quantity of reading across the school.

“This magical new library will only deepen that progress.
“It is a creative, woodland sanctuary for all children and a space where imagination can truly flourish.”
She added: “We couldn’t have achieved this without the support of parents’ group The Friends of Terrington Hall, who made a generous donation.
“Their fundraising efforts throughout the year are hugely appreciated.”
