Coronavirus: 'Business as usual' for Scarborough Council

Scarborough Council says it currently has no plans to cancel meetings as it continues to monitor the coronavirus outbreak.

The authority will carry on “as normal” as it works with bodies across the county to stay on top of the situation.

The statement comes after a man in his 60s became the UK’s third death linked to the Covid-19 virus, with the total of confirmed cases in the UK hitting 279.

Powys Council in Wales announced it is exploring whether it could hold its meetings via video conferencing as a way of limiting exposure to the virus, although there are issues to be tackled including legal restrictions that would not allow for voting online.

Scarborough Council says it has no plans to adopt such measures at this time and that it is preparing its response.

A spokesman said: “Our democratic processes, including council and committee meetings, continue as normal.

“As part of the North Yorkshire Local Resilience Forum, we are working with all our health partners nationally and regionally as well as North Yorkshire Police and following the latest expert advice to plan for coronavirus.

“While we are not anticipating a worst-case scenario, we are planning for it as the public would expect us to so that we are as prepared as possible.”
