During last month's national lockdown, police handed out more than 230 fines - worth £35,000 - to people in North Yorkshire not sticking to restrictions.

Of those 230 fines, 178 were to people along the coast.

Richard Flinton, Chief Executive of North Yorkshire County Council, said most fines were slapped on people "out and about in lockdown without a reasonable excuse".

He added: "Despite the thoughtlessness of those few, the vast majority of the residents of Scarborough, Whitby and Filey still managed to pull together to turn the tide on the virus, which shows everywhere else what can be done when we stand together."
