Covid-19 cases continue to rise across Scarborough borough; people urged to 'pull together'

The latest number of confirmed cases for the Scarborough borough, updated by the Government late this afternoon, was 645 - a jump of 47 in a week.

People across the area have been urged to pull together amidst the escalating number of cases in a bid to avoid a local lockdown.

North Yorkshire's Resilience Forum is urging everyone to adhere to social distancing and hygiene guidance, saying the county is facing a "pivotal moment".

The forum says there have been increases across the county, but particularly in the Selby, Scarborough and Harrogate areas.

Surge in Covid-19 cases across the Scarborough borough in past week

Most of the recent cases for the Scarborough borough were in Whitby.

Whitby Town FC were told they had to play Saturday’s home game against York City behind closed doors following concerns from Public Health England North Yorkshire.

The team thanked all the Whitby Town and York City fans who forfeited their match ticket refunds to help following the blow.

As reported yesterday, popular Filey fish and chip shop Inghams announced it was shutting because of coronavirus concerns.

The restaurant and takeaway on Belle Vue Street said a member of staff has been in contact with someone who has had a positive test.

It said it was closing until all staff members have been tested and for a deep clean, adding it “should be able to open on Monday”.

More than a dozen Whitby businesses shut last week following coronavirus concerns. Some had staff or customers who had tested positive for the disease, some had staff who were displaying symptoms and some had workers who had been in touch with people who had tested positive.

Several other businesses shut citing a surge in cases in the area.

Most have since reopened, with more planning to welcome people back over the coming days.
