Ministers are meeting today to discuss whether to move more areas into higher tiers amid growing concern over spreading of a new variant of Covid-19.
The talks may mean areas surrounding parts of the South and South East that were placed in Tier 4 at the weekend could also be in the harshest restrictions from Boxing Day.
There has also been speculation that some Tier 2 areas could be moved into Tier 3.
Council chiefs have been warning that Scarborough residents could find themselves in Tier 3 if infection rates continue to rise at a rapid rate.
A Government announcement is expected later today.
