'People have woken up to the risk': MP Robert Goodwill welcomes news of Tier 2, not Tier 3, for Scarborough borough

Scarborough, Whitby and the rest of North Yorkshire has been placed in Tier 2 of the coronavirus restrictions for when lockdown ends on December 2.

The ‘High’ alert level is stricter than the Tier 1 restriction Scarborough had before the current lockdown was brought in.

Mr Goodwill said: “I think they will be breathing a big sigh of relief in Scarborough and Whitby that we are in Tier 2 so that restaurants can open and pubs can serve substantial meals with drinks.

“It is slightly more restriction than we previously had but the good news is hotels and hospitality can open as long as they are serving food, not just drink.

“If this had been two weeks ago I suspect we would have been in Tier 3 and I think people have woken up to the risk.

“A lot of people were blaming infection levels on people coming into the area and as long as we keep away from people from away we will be okay, but the evidence is clear that it has been mixing in people’s homes and in other private locations that spread the disease.

“It is quite clear from the figures that people have understood the need to comply with the rules and our reward is to not be put into Tier 3.”
