Scalby Slimming World Group members have been adapting to the lockdown by holding meetings via Zoom and taking a virtual route through Europe.

Individuals have been recording their daily step count and sending the details to consultant Jackie Gaches who then calculated how far they had travelled.

She then mapped the nearest location and sent out a picture of the town or village they have reached and will stay (virtually) overnight.

The group, which in normal times meets at Scalby Methodist Chapel on Wednesday mornings, sees members support each other while losing weight.

Jackie said: “I wanted a fun way to get people walking more, especially when the weather isn’t good and the temptation is to stay indoors.

“I decided to set a challenge to see how far we could walk during February.

“Our aim was to reach Paris by the end of the month, but it was amazing to see how quickly and how far our combined steps took us and we actually arrived at the destination within 10 days.

“The group was enjoying the challenge so we kept recording and walking.

“We headed to Barcelona and arrived on Saturday, February 20 and continued down the East Coast past Valencia eventually reaching Malaga on Sunday, February 28.

“It’s a bit of fun that helps people to get moving, walk that little bit further and be healthier.”

Scalby member Helen explained how she has benefited from the support during lockdown.

She said: “It’s been a social event on Zoom with friends I’ve known and some new ones I look forward to meeting in person when we can.

“Our virtual trip to Europe has made us get out and walk more and to interact on each place we’ve reached.

“I’ve lost weight during lockdown and gained a group of friends at a time when I needed them the most!”

The group meets on Wednesday mornings.
