Whitby physios diagnose rare condition, Cauda Equina Syndrome, over phone

The condition is named Cauda Equina Syndrome.

Despite being an uncommon condition, the trust’s staff are always watchful of this and have the small possibility in the back of their minds when speaking with patients who present with specific symptoms.

The syndrome is often hard to spot, as the symptoms mimic that of other conditions.

It’s therefore impressive that the team managed to recognise the symptoms without seeing the patients face-to-face.

The treatment required for this condition is usually same day spinal surgery.

Without this intervention, the patient could experience permanent loss of bowel and bladder control, as well as permanent leg weakness.

Miles Callum, specialist MSK physiotherapist at the trust, said: “In my ten years practice, I have come across three suspected cases.

“In all three cases, the syndrome was ruled out upon further investigation.

“This is the first time in my career that my suspicions have been correct.

“To have my suspicions confirmed, especially after a telephone appointment, is very reassuring for me as a clinician.

“This paired with the fact that one of my colleagues also picked up a suspected case soon after, has helped us all have the confidence in our current ways of working.

“It shows how important listening to a patient’s narrative is within our assessments.”
